Throughout the seasons, De Proeftuin hosts workshops, talks and masterclasses that bring together artists, makers, and nature enthusiasts.
From botanical drawing, making plant medicines to sculpting with natural materials, each session offers a hands-on approach to working with and learning from the micro- and macrocosmos you are part of.

Het lijkt op alchemie, toch is de transformatie in essentie heel eenvoudig: het vormen en polijsten van modder tot een glanzende, egale bol.
Deze Japanse techniek, dorodango, is een meditatieve kunstvorm die je dit najaar in De Proeftuin kunt leren.
Op zondag 12 oktober en 2 november struinen we door De proeftuin en delven we samen klei. Laat de regen maar komen; In het tuinhuis brandt het vuur en is er ruimte om in alle rust te werken aan jouw eigen parel.

The knowledge about the medicinal properties of plants has only been partially passed down through the centuries, but fortunately it’s straightforward to learn anew; after all, an apothecary grows all around us.
Learn more about the healing properties of plants in our Garden Apothecary course at De Proeftuin this autumn. Beloved herbalist and author Leoniek Bontje and De Proeftuin founder Anke Riesenkamp will take you on an exploration of herbs and plants that help with everyday ailments, immunity and recovery.
We’ll delve into how plants can support the body: from the nervous system and digestion to the immune system and skin. With the tinctures, salves and tisanes that you make during the masterclass, you’ll build your own garden apothecary step by step.
The Garden Apothecary course takes place on Saturday 11th October and Saturday 1st November from 10:00 to 16:00, including lunch from the garden.The course consists of one or two days, depending on your choice. The days complement each other and cover different bodily systems and the plants that correspond to them.
Day 1 – Saturday 11th October
Theme: the internal body. Focus on the immune system and first aid. We’ll make a tincture, oxymel, infusion and immune booster using herbs from De Proeftuin, amongst other things.
Day 2 – Saturday 1st November
Theme: the external body. Focus on the skin as the largest organ of absorption and on hair and nails. We’ll make an oil, an ointment and a first aid spray for wound care.

You Are a Garden – Wild Lessons from Nature 🌱

What you will learn:
During this spring to autumn workshop series you’ll learn the basics of gardening and discover how an ecosystem functions.
In De Proeftuin, between Haarlem and Amsterdam, we will sow, plant, weed, harvest, and taste together in the wild garden and vegetable garden.
During 5 Saturday mornings, you will learn the basics of gardening and wildforaging and discover how an ecosystem works.
You will not only gain practical gardening and cultivation knowledge but also find inspiration from thinkers, artists, and scientists who offer unique perspectives on the relationship between humans and nature (including Rupert Sheldrake, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Lynn Margulis, and James Lovelock).

Artist in the garden – five Masterclasses in June 2025

Scientific research has shown that a natural environment enhances our creativity: the moving air, the scent of plants, sounds and colors, and organic shapes help calm our minds and inspire us.
In the experimental garden, we are organizing a series of workshops with various artists, each working with different natural materials:
Visual artist Anouk Griffioen guides you in botanical drawing with charcoal, while sculptor Esther de Graaf leads the creation of sculptures from branches and reeds. With visual artist Frida Berntsen, you will explore umbelliferous flowers to make eco-prints using natural ink. Ceramist Anouk Martijn teaches you how to dig for clay and create small ceramic works inspired by seeds. Conceptual designer Merle Bergers brings the landscape to life through the scents of plants.
During this series of six Sunday mornings, you will have the opportunity to discover how nature inspires you.
Together with Anke Riesenkamp, you will explore The Patch- De Proeftuin, and under the guidance of artists, you will experiment with different materials, embracing nature as your muse. Each workshop focuses on a different material, offering space for experimentation, enjoyment, and wonder.

PLANT ALS MEDICIJN
Herbalist en schrijver Leoniek Bontje is inmiddels een vaste gast in de proeftuin waar, in de wilde woestheid, steeds meer inheemse en geneeskrachtige planten verschijnen. Om met een sterk en gezond lichaam de winter in te gaan leert ze jou in een workshop welke planten er om je heen groeien in deze tijd van het jaar en hoe je simpele medicijnen van planten kunt maken.
Je maakt twee plantmedicijn en gat naar huis met veel kennis over hoe je zelf aan de slag kunt gaan.
Tijdens de workshop beginnen we met een wandeling door de proeftuin. Leoniek Bontje vertelt over de voedingswaarde en geneeskrachtige werking van verschillende planten. Vervolgens maken we een plantmedicijn op basis van appelciderazijn, dat goed is voor je immuunsysteem, en een maceraat, waarbij planten in olie worden getrokken

VISIBLE MENDING
Aan de houtkachel in de proeftuin ga je met textielkunstenaar Bronwen Jones aan het stoppen en creatief herstellen en leer je over de geschiedenis en vormen van de verschillende eeuwenoude technieken van over de hele wereld.
De jonge Britse textielkunstenaar Bronwen Jones ontmoetten we eerder dit jaar op Art Rotterdam waar we zagen hoe zij sleetse plekken en gaatjes in kleren met kleurrijke wol herstelt waardoor het verhaal dat elk stuk in zich draagt zichtbaar wordt.
De kunstenaar is onderdeel van een populaire beweging “Visible mending’ die, in het tijdperk van fast-fashion en overvloed, uitdrukking geeft aan de behoefte aan een meer duurzame relatie met grondstoffen en kleding door ervoor te zorgen.
